Hi there! I’m Lauren Saunders, a 37-year-old self-taught chef, recipe creator, and food-lover based in the foothills just outside Asheville, North Carolina.
My culinary journey began with a grilled cheese disaster at age nine (shoutout to my brave toaster oven). The smoke alarm may have won that round, but it sparked something in me. Since then, I’ve been on a joyful, messy, delicious path of cooking, experimenting, and connecting with people through food.

A Not-So-Traditional Path to the Kitchen
I didn’t go to culinary school. Instead, I studied environmental science, worked in community gardens, and spent years as a freelance photographer. But food always pulled me back. I started by hosting backyard dinners, then pop-up suppers in my neighborhood. Eventually, I found myself knee-deep in sourdough starters and fermenting anything that would fit in a mason jar.
I’ve continued learning with courses like:
✅ Rouxbe Online Culinary Schoo: Foundations of Cooking
✅ Stanford Nutrition Science Course (Online)
✅ ServSafe® Food Handler Certificate
These programs deepened my understanding of safe food practices, nutrition, and flavor-building, while still keeping my style fun, intuitive, and accessible.

What I Believe About Cooking
Cooking should feel like play. I chase cozy stews with unexpected twists, cookies with sea salt and rosemary, and vibrant seasonal dishes that celebrate what’s fresh and local. I don’t aim for perfection, I aim for comfort, connection, and those “wow, I made this?” moments.
I’m especially passionate about food that supports wellness without sacrificing flavor. If you’re curious, check out a few of my favorite creations:
